I grew up in a city that lacked diversity. Racial issues were rarely, if ever, talked about in my elementary school and high school, and rarely were they discussed as a family when I was growing up. Not that we were actively avoiding the issue at home. It just wasn’t on our radar.
But you had better believe the issue is on my radar now.
I have learned much in the past few weeks – about the Black Lives Matter movement, the racist system and society that we live in and how it came to exist. How did I not learn, know or understand more about this until just a few days ago? My history books were white-washed – but I am to blame, too, for not paying closer attention until quite recently.
I now understand how critical it is that as a white person, I learn, unlearn, listen, understand, engage and ultimately act upon all that I am opening my eyes and my heart to about Black people. I am grateful to Black activists, individuals and organizations leading and guiding those of us who are now making an effort to try to understand systemic racism in our society – and to act for change.
Actions that KUcumber Nutrition Communications is Taking
As an individual and a sole owner of a small nutrition communications firm, I have a responsibility to act. I am choosing to do this by:
- Helping my food/beverage and health/wellness clients communicate how they are taking action in the pursuit of racial justice
- Educating myself so that I may become a more informed business owner and individual – reading, listening, tuning in, viewing, etc. about the Black Lives Matter movement
- Supporting Black-owned businesses and local Black-owned restaurants
- Donating to organizations including Black Lives Matter and Seattle BIPOC Organic Food Bank
- Engaging in conversations about race with family, friends, peers and colleagues
I also am offering my services to POC and BIPOC in the food and beverage industry, restaurant industry, and/or health and wellness industries with their communications and marketing needs. I want to do my best to reduce barriers for those who may not have access to resources or trainings to market their incredible products and services. Details follow!
